Reiki Myths (That Make Us Laugh… Lovingly)
Myth #1: “Reiki will possess you”
Let’s start strong.
Reiki sessions do not involve chanting, levitating, glowing eyes, or surprise spiritual takeovers. There is no possession, no entities, and no horror-movie moments.
What actually happens?
You lie down. You breathe. You relax.
Sometimes you fall asleep. Sometimes you snore.
Very spooky.
Myth #2: “The practitioner can read your mind”
If Reiki practitioners could read minds, we would absolutely not need intake forms or follow-up questions like:
“So… how are you feeling?”
Reiki doesn’t involve mind-reading, thought-control, or secret psychic surveillance. Your thoughts remain private. Promise.
Myth #3: “You have to believe in Reiki for it to work”
This one’s a favourite.
Reiki doesn’t require belief, faith, or a spiritual identity. It works with the nervous system, not your opinions. Skeptics, over-thinkers, and logical minds often experience some of the deepest relaxation—sometimes to their own surprise.
Your body knows how to rest, even if your mind is unconvinced.
Myth #4: “Reiki will make you cry uncontrollably”
Will some people cry during or after a session? Yes.
Will everyone cry? Absolutely not.
Other common responses include:
yawning
feeling calm
feeling grounded
falling asleep
feeling lighter later that day or the next
Crying is just one possible response—not a requirement and definitely not a guarantee.
Myth #5: “Reiki will instantly fix your entire life”
As much as we’d all love this one to be true, Reiki is not a magic wand.
What it does do is help your body shift out of stress mode and into a state of safety and balance. From there, clarity improves, emotions soften, and healing becomes more accessible.
Reiki supports the process—it doesn’t bypass being human.
So… What Is Reiki, Really?
At its core, Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that supports relaxation, nervous system regulation, and overall well-being. It doesn’t force change, fix you, or turn you into someone else.
It simply creates the conditions where healing can happen.
No fear. No pressure. No myths required.
Just a calm space, intentional touch or energy work, and permission for your body to finally exhale 🤍
